Basically, there are a couple of types of tomato plants that can be grown and they are the determinate and the indeterminate variants.

The determinate variants grow to a predetermined height of around 6 feet and ripen within a short duration of time while the indeterminate variant grows throughout the year and can be 6-12 feet in height. So, ensure that you choose tomato varieties that belong to the determinate group for your tomato garden. Rutgers, Roma, Celebrity and Marglobe are a few of the determinate variants you can choose for your indoor tomato garden. But, if ever you want to give the indeterminate variety a try, then you have to resort to hanging planters or upside down indoor tomato gardens.

The tomato seedlings should be planted in depth and their roots need at least one inch deep water once in 2-3 days timeframe. So, watering tomato plants once in two days would prove to be utile and fruitful. Since the tomatoes require large amounts of water and are planted deep, large sized containers are always preferable in case of indoor tomato gardening.

Tomatoes have proven to be good feeders. The nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium ratio present in fertilizers that are fed to the tomato plants can be 1:1:1 or 5:10:10. Even a ratio of 5:20:10 is acceptable. However, preparing your own compost pile for the indoor tomato plants is always a better choice then resorting to commercial fertilizers.

Excessive watering of the indoor tomato plants opens up the probability of the unfolding bud to become rot. Opt to have automated watering techniques like drip irrigation systems in your indoor tomato garden for that would reduce your strain and efforts too. Ensure that you have the right indoor gardening equipments for that would aid you in planting and maintaining your indoor tomato garden easily.

In case of the absence of strong sunlight, you can resort to indoor lighting by making use of fluorescent/candescent bulbs. You can easily purchase them at a local mart for nominal rates with ease.

The main advantages of growing tomatoes indoor are the following. You can protect your tomato plants from deep heat and freezing cold temperatures easily. You can expect to make use of home grown tomatoes throughout the year irrespective of seasonal changes. You can port them to your garden whenever you wish to and you can stretch the time taken for the tomatoes to ripe.

In case if your tomato plants do not get sunlight, you need to resort to artificial lighting since tomatoes requires good amount of sunlight for healthy growing. This proves to be a bit expensive. You have to take the pain of preparing your own organic compost pile. Commercial fertilizers may not be a very good option for indoor tomato gardens.Determinate variety is suitable for indoor growing. However, the indeterminate variant is more fruit dense than the determinate variant. Even if you decide to go in for indeterminate variety of tomatoes, you have to opt for hanging planters or upside down tomato gardens which might prove to be expensive.
