PVC Greenhouses-How To Build One

Assuming that you’ve already chosen the perfect spot to place your small PVC greenhouse, here is a step-by-step guide on how to build a simple PVC house of your own.

Here is a breakdown of what you’ll need:

-  Door Hinges and Handles

-  4 ft. of wooden lathe

-  (34) 1/2″x24″ sections of rebar

-  (19) 1/2″ x 20 ft. pvc pipe

-  14 pieces of 2ft x 4ft x 12ft lengths of framing wood.

-  2 pieces of 2′x6′x12′ lengths of wood.

-  (4) 2×6 - 16′ sections of framing lumber.

-  Zip ties

-  Nails/screws

-  Metal U Bands

Step 1 - Build the Frame

Using the 2×6s to put together a 12′x32′ frame. Screw the ends together so that each corner forms a perfect square. You can keep the square in place by putting a 30″ piece of rebar in each corner.

Second Step - Add On The PVC Pipes:

Now it’s time to insert the pieces of rebar through the U-brackets into the earth to a depth of 20 to 24 inches, this will keep your base fixed to the ground.

Third Step: PVC Pipes Over Rebar:

Place each end of the pvc tubing over the exposed rebar sections one after another so that you form an upside down rib cage frame along the full length of the base.

Step 4 - Set Up The Ends of The House:

Cut the 12′ 2×4s into the following pieces.

(4) 1′6″ (4) 5′7″ (8) 1′11 1/4″ (2) 4′1/4″ (2) 11′8 3/4″ (4) 4′7″

The 5′7″ pieces should stand up and form a door. The 4′1/4″ runs across the 5′7″ door. The (2) 4′7″ and the 1′11 1/4″ serves as reinforcement and looks like a smaller door on both sides of the large center 5′7″ door. Next take the 1′6″ and 1′11 1/4″ lengths and fashion these sections into a smaller version of that box. This will provide even more support.

At this point you can run the 32 ft. length of pvc and use it to form a ridge for the top of the semi-hoop frame. Connect the zip ties to every place the semi-hoops meet this ridge pvc section to form a stable finished framework.

Step 5 - Put The Greenhouse Plastic On Top:

Drape a sturdy 4 mil plastic over the length of the greenhouse with overlap at the ends in order to cover the end walls. Use wood lathe or staples to keep the plastic in place.

Sixth Step:
Build a door frame by cutting the 12′ 2×4s and place it in the frame of the 4′1/4″ mad 5′7″ door space. Attach a hinge and cover this door in plastic as well. Attach door handles to the door and mount it to the frame.

And there you have it… a PVC greenhouse. This is the simplest of all backyard greenhouse designs to build but they do the trick quite well in my experience. Happy green-housing!
