Who’s Doing The Paving?

There are lots of things that you may want paved, but often the decision on whether or not paving takes place is left to the municipality that operates in the area. Getting things paved can be a process that requires quite a bit of lobbying in some cases. Other times you can take care of the work yourself and don’t need to involve anyone else. You just need to know when you can do the work yourself and when you may be required to involve your local government.

You should be able to determine if the government needs to be involved by looking at where the paving will happen. If you want to pave something that is on your own property then you can usually go right ahead and do that. You will still probably need to go and acquire the necessary permits from your local government agency that are required for such work.

Most of the time when paving work is needed on public land it is public dollars that must pay for it. When this is the situation a government entity will award a contract for the job to a construction company. In other cases, depending on the size of the job, the government won’t need to hire the work out.

When a government entity can take care of the work themselves it is quite different than going through the process of hiring a company to do the work for them. Usually government agencies are not in the paving business though. This means they won’t have the necessary tools, equipment and manpower to take care of the job without contracting out to other companies.

If you think that paving needs to be done on public land then you will need to take it upon yourself to lobby your local government. Most of the time there is a long list of paving projects that already exists. There is also a limit to the dollars available to be spent on such projects and sometimes they charge local homeowners for the work if they are impacted by the improvement.
