Starting A Lawn

Grass care could well essentially be started with the preparation of your brand new lawn. Just like any other living thing, grass likes first-class conditions for healthy and vigorous growth. Unluckily for a lot of us driven to have a delightful area of grass to look at, and walk or sit on, this will invariably mean more than a little hard effort. The ground we are going to put the lawn on ought to be devoid of pebbles, other hard stuff as well as weeds. It is a good idea to incorporate organic material in the land as we dig it {over} to ensure that we have got out all problematic items as well as the weeds. When we are sifting through the earth to get rid of all those weeds, we might also be searching for grubs and other creatures that might just be the cause of problems in the future. Having made that fine tilth you have to make absolutely sure that our lawn patch is nice and flat so that the mower will have a smooth drive over it and there will be no scalping of humps and bumps or longer bits of grass in dips.

When we moved into our first new place I used the weight of our two daughters to help. I dug over and cleaned up the area first. Then I used a decent sized plank that the workmen had made a makeshift bench out of. I turned it upside down and tied the tow rope from my car to the legs. I sat my daughters on the resulting “machine” and heaved them around. This killed two birds with one stone. It kept them amused and well behaved as I levelled the land. Whenever I saw low bits or bumps I used a rake to move some earth to eradicate them. The end product was a almost perfect flat surface and two happy young ones.

There is a grass care decision to be made when we have achieved our nice level zone. Do we put down turf or ought we sow seed? There are a quantity of things to consider here. Can you afford high quality turf? It ought to be the best available or all the hard work of preparation can be wasted as mediocre quality turf might have weeds already in it or not have been lifted correctly so that it is thin and not have a well developed root system. If you like the thought of sowing seed, what season is it? The best season to sow is when fall is coming on because with the cooler, wetter weather there will be less requirement to water the seedlings and there should be no need for us to tread our freshly sown grass down. Once more you must be looking for the better quality seed that will be right for the type of climate we live in.

Once the turf is laid or the seed sown you must make sure that the ground does not dry out or that folks trample the area prior to our marvellous new lawn is fully established. Should one need to get across the new lawn, try using a plank or other system to spread your weight so that you will not damage the grass under foot. Do not forget to take the board or whatever up again as soon as you have finished for the day so that the grass will recover quickly. Make sure that the lawn is able to withstand a lawn mower before giving it the first cut. Talking of that first mowing, do not get too close to the earth. Good grass care suggests that you give it a few cuts to make sure the sward is healthy prior to trying for that beautiful “bowling green” look.
