Picking A Perfect Surf Fishing Rod

Surf Fishing Rods are unique in design and characteristics. You need to carefully choose the surf fishing rod that will fit your needs. Here are some tips that will help you make an intelligent choice.

The backbone, or the surf fishing rod’s power rating, must be your first consideration. The power rating determines the fish fighting strength of the surf fishing rod.The surf rod’s backbone must be stronger than the surf fish you are trying to catch. However, you don’t want to sacrifice the rod’s casting distance; so, you need a surf fishing rod that has medium power rating.

Surf fishing requires the ability to cast long distances. In order to be able to cast as far outs as possible surf fishing rods should be long.A good surf fishing rod length is around 10’ to 12′.  Rods that are too long will be harder to cast while rods that are too short will greatly decrease casting distance.

Different types of surf fishing rods have been created for  different surf fishing conditions. Some fishing rods are built for fast action while others are built for medium or slower action.Rod taper is the distinguishing element of this characteristic. If a surf fishing rod has slow action it bends from the bottom third of the rod. If it has fast action it bends from to top third of the rod. Surf fishing rods are designed to have medium action that means the rod should bend from the middle.

Materials used for surf fishing rods vary.Top quality surf fishing rods are fitted with silicon carbide guides. The best guides are very hard and smoothe and resist wear. The smoothness helps increase the casting distance. The second kind of material is the ceramic guides.Although ceramic may not be as hard as silicon, it is still as reliable.

Finally, you may want to check out the reel seats of the surf fishing rod.  Reel seats are made from metal alloys or graphite.Reel seats should be made from non corrosive material since the surf environment is very open to corrosion of materials.Metal alloys are more condusive to surf fishing rather than graphite reel seats which corrode more easily.
